There's definitely too much emphasis on Yang energy in the US (I'm a US-based dancer); it's a shame too, because one can learn a lot from Yin qualities like gentleness and receptiveness.

That's really interesting how you feel secure when following, especially as a man. I definitely need to follow in your footsteps and learn to feel more comfortable with expressing Yin energy.Alicia Michellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15108158278800029905noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8035244062520832583.post-3714054214383660172021-06-14T12:25:03.584-04:002021-06-14T12:25:03.584-04:00Hi Alicia… Hmmm. My personal belief is that both men and women in the US are far to aligned to Yang energies. To be « professional » for a woman in the US means to « act like a man » too often. A man or a woman has no true power until Yin and Yang are internally balanced. That’s my take. The unisex element was particularly interesting, especially since the cultural tides in the US encourage "empowered, independent, strong" womanhood. As a lady who entered tango just three years ago, I still struggle with surrendering to leads; despite often craving a respite from having to embody masculine energy, surrendering feels incorrect, like I'm betraying feminism.

Perhaps tango teachers should address gender roles and how they relate to the dance in their classes. Helping followers embrace their feminine sides, and letting them know that it's okay to channel traditionally feminine energy, would make for a great workshop topic, I think.
Alicia Michellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15108158278800029905noreply@blogger.com
